I ruffle my little sister Alex’s hair as I head into the main part of the kitchen, grabbing a piece of toast my mom already made before slicing an avocado and placing it on top with salt and pepper. I sit down at the table with my siblings, my brothers face immediately contorting with disgust.
“Why do you eat that stuff?”
“Because it tastes good. And it’s healthy for the human body. Unlike that sugary off brand cereal you’re always eating.” I say this with a smile as he rolls his eyes, taking another bite of my toast and making a moaning sound to rub in just how much I’m enjoying my pitted vegetable on crispy grain.
“She’s got a point…” Alex says and Riley in return shoves her slightly. Like all siblings do at some point in the day, they start bickering, nudging and punching each other. They honestly tussle like they are lion cubs. My mom moves to break it up but I stand up first, leaning over the table and flicking both of their ears.
“Be nice to each other.” Riley starts to say something but I go to flick him again and he stops. “Love not hate.” I sit back down, seeing my moms rare smile out of the corner of my eye and I smile myself.
I look over at the clock and quickly pop the rest of my toast into my mouth. I swing around the table, grabbing my coat and bag off their respective hooks, flinging them over my shoulder. I run over to kiss my sister on the top of the head, trying to do the same to my brother who dodges it with an ‘Ewwwwww gross’.
“Remember, love not hate! Or I won’t bring your favorite doughnut home like you asked.” I give him a look of seriousness before smiling a bit, walking over to my mom. “Love you mama,” I say softly, kissing her on the cheek. “See you at dinner.”
I head out the door after letting my mom kiss me back, going down the three stairs and out my gate to the car that is waiting for me already. My best friend Jamie waves at me through the window and I wave back, smiling as I get into the car and pointing down the road dramatically.
“Onward, my dear comrade!”
